Berlin experience
Attractions around our Grand City Hotel Globus Berlin
The Berlin-Hohenschönhausen Memorial is located on the site of the former main remand prison of the Ministry of State Security. Former prisoners guide visitors through the prison and explain the custody conditions and interrogation techniques of the GDR State Security Service.
The last Minister of the GDR, Erich Mielke, controlled the Ministry of State Security from here until 1989. After the complex was stormed on 15 January 1990, the rooms on the Minister's floor were sealed and maintained in their original condition.
Trendy district of Friedrichshain (Simon-Dach-Strasse) approx. 3 km
A lively district with a wealth of restaurants, cafés and bars. In summer there is open-air seating for around 1,900 people in some 20 locations.
Alexanderplatz and Fernsehturm (TV Tower) approx. 5 km
Alexanderplatz lies directly on the traffic route between the east and west parts of Berlin and is the traffic hub and stomping ground of the cosmopolitan city. The tallest building in Germany, the Berlin Fernsehturm (TV Tower) towers over the square. Its panorama deck provides a fantastic view over Berlin and its attractions.
Historic Nikolaiviertel approx. 5 km
The Nikolaiviertel is a traditional Berlin island round the Nikolaikirche, the city's oldest parish church. Many restaurants, cafés and stores invite you to take a stroll and shop a little. Reconstructed historic buildings and modern apartment blocks convey the district's special flair. "Must-sees" include Ephraim-Palais, the "Gaststätte zum Nussbaum" and the reconstructed "Gerichtslaube" of Berlin's medieval town hall.
Berliner Dom approx. 6 km
The Berliner Dom (Berlin Cathedral), built in Italian high renaissance style, is the largest protestant church constructed in the 19th century. The Hohenzollern Crypt, with around 100 sarcophagi and tombs, is particularly important in a cultural historical sense. The Predigtkirche contains the famous reredos with the 12 apostles by Karl Friedrich Schinkel and the large Sauer Organ.
Museumsinsel approx. 6 km
The Museumsinsel (Museum Island) is home to five of Berlin's most important museums: The Alte Museum (Old Museum) with its collection of Greek antiquities. The Neue Museum (New Museum) including the Ägyptischen Museum (Egyptian Museum) displays the bust of Nofretete. The Pergamon Museum features the Collection of Classical Antiquities, the Museum of the Ancient Near East and the Museum of Islamic Art. The Alte Nationalgalerie (Old National Gallery) exhibits sculptures and paintings from the 19th century. The Bode Museum includes the Museum of Byzantine Art and the Coin Cabinet.
